How to Add Printer to HP Connected [Detailed Guide]

This article will provide you with a detailed guide on how to add printer to HP connected.

Steps on How to Add Printer to HP Connected

To add a printer to HP connected, follow the instructions below.

Before you begin the process of adding your HP printer to HP connected, you need to confirm that your printer supports web-connected printing services. If your HP printer does not support these kinds of services, then you will not be able to add it to HP connected.

Also, if this is your first time setting up this service, you will need to create an HP account in case you don’t have one. If you have an account already, then you will need to sign in.

If you have updated HP Smart to the most current version, then you don’t have to sign in or create an HP account. You will only need to do that if you do the following:

i. Install a new HP+ printer.

ii. Install the HP Smart app on a device that HP Smart wasn’t installed on before, or you uninstall and then reinstall HP Smart.

Important: The website for HP Smart is only available to certain regions or countries. Therefore, if your region or country is not listed here, then you cannot use the feature. If your region or country is listed, simply click on your region or country and then click on the language menu.

It is possible that your HP printer might have been added to HP connected if your printer was registered with the website for HP Smart during the initial printer setup. Therefore, to confirm, visit https://www.hpsmart.com/. After that, sign in.

  • If your HP printer is on the list, skip to “Step 5 – Set up Web-Connected Printing Services” below.
  • If you are using an HP+ printer, then you need to download your printer’s software from https://123.hp.com/. After that, follow the promptings on the screen to set your HP printer up and then sign in to your account. This is necessary because an HP+ printer cannot be manually added via the printer code.
  • In case you can’t find your HP printer in the list, then do the steps below to add your HP printer to HP Connected.

Step 1 – Acquire the Printer Code

To acquire the printer code, you will need to connect your HP product to the internet.

On Chromebook or Computer

Do the following to get the printer code for printers without text-based or touchscreen display on Chromebook or Computers.

For Chromebooks and computers, you will need to use the Embedded Web Server feature to enable your printer’s web services in order to acquire the printer code.

Follow the instructions below to do this:

i. Ensure that your HP printer is linked to either a wireless or wired (Ethernet) network that is actively connected to the internet.

Important: If your HP printer is linked to your computer via a USB cable, you will not be able to access web-connected printing services. Therefore, if your printer is connected via USB to your computer, disconnect the cable before you continue.

  • If you are using Ethernet (wired) connection, you should check the Ethernet cable and the Ethernet port LED indicators on your printer. The green link LED indicator should remain steady, while the orange activity LED indicator should only blink when you connect the Ethernet cable.
  • If you are using a wireless (Wi-Fi) connection, ensure that the printer’s wireless function is turned on. Also, confirm that your printer and computer are on the same wireless network.

Some HP printers are designed with a wireless (Wi-Fi) icon as well as a blue LED indicator at the printer’s front area. If your HP printer has the blue LED indicator and you see that the indicator is on but not blinking, then it means your HP printer is successfully connected.

ii. Print out a “Wireless Network Test Results” or “Network Configuration” page via the button combinations that apply to the control panel of your printer.

  • Most HP Printers: Press your printer’s “Information” and “Wireless” buttons at once. Alternatively, press the “Start Copy Black” and “Wireless” buttons at once.
  • HP Tango, Envy 6400 and 6000, and Deskjet 6400 and 6000 printers: Hold down the button for “Information” until you see all the LED indicators on your printer’s control panel light up. After that, touch the “Resume” and “Information” buttons at once.

iii. In the Wireless Network Test Results or Network Configuration page you just printed, locate the IP address of your HP printer.

iv. Type the IP address of your printer into the address line of a web browser.

v. Press “Enter” on your keyboard.

Important: Ensure that you type your printer’s IP address in your browser’s address box and not a search engine or search box. If you do the latter, the Embedded Web Server will not open.

vi. If a certificate or login window is displayed, fill in the details to open the Embedded Web Server.

  • If you see a website security certificate, then click on “Continue”. The Embedded Web Server will then open.
  • If you see a login window, in the field for “Username”, type “admin”. After that, type in the PIN located on the UPC sticker under or at the rear of your printer. Or you can enter your printer administrator password.

vii. Once the Embedded Web Server opens, click on the tab labeled “Web Services”.

  • If you can’t find this tab, then it means your HP printer doesn’t have Web Services support.
  • If you find a summary page, then it means the Web Services is on already.
  • If you find a setup page, then you should follow the on-screen prompts to turn the Web Services on.

Important: If you can’t turn the Web Services on, then you should confirm that your printer’s firmware version is the most current one. If it isn’t, then you need to update your printer’s firmware. To update your HP printer firmware, click this link: HP Printer Errors and Solutions – Check the Printhead, and follow the instructions shared in the “How to Update HP Printer Firmware” subsection.

Once the Web Services have been enabled, your printer will print an info page with the printer code on it. You can then move to step 2.

Step 2 – Locate the Printer Code

Now you need to locate the printer code that is listed on the information page.

  • In case the printer code you see on the info page is long without having any space, then its validity period is 48 hours from the time you printed the information page. Once this period elapses, the code will expire. If that happens, you will need to print another info page and acquire another printer code.
  • In case the printer code you see is in groups of four with letters and numbers and spaces between, then this kind of code doesn’t expire. However, if you choose to print the info page again, a new printer code will be listed. Hence, the first code you got will not be valid anymore since a new code has been generated.
  • If you don’t find a printer code on the info page, then it means that your HP product might already be added to another HP Connected (HP Smart) account. Nevertheless, you can still remove your HP product from that particular account or even turn off Web Services and then on it again on your printer. Hence, when you print a new information page, you should get a new code that will replace the old one.

Step 3 – Add your HP Printer Using the Printer Code

Configuring HP Instant Ink

This service is supported by certain HP printers and is only available in certain regions and countries as a means of getting ink replacement at a cheaper cost. What happens is that your HP printer monitors the ink level and then sends the data to HP using the internet. Once your printer’s ink becomes low, HP will ship replacement ink to you automatically.

To use this service, you will need to enroll for it. If you are interested in enrolling, follow the guide in the subsection below.

How to Enroll in HP Instant Ink

To enroll in HP Instant ink, do the following:

i. Check the Requirements for HP Instant Ink.

  • An HP printer with HP Instant Ink eligibility: Go to this site and then scroll down the page and click on the link for “Check to see if your HP printer works with Instant Ink”. In the list, check if your printer is listed.
  • An HP Printer actively connected to the internet: Your printer must be on either a wireless or wired internet connection, and the printer’s Web Services has to be on. This is necessary to enable secure monitoring of the ink status of your printer by HP Instant Ink. While your printer doesn’t have to be connected daily to the internet, HP recommends that a connection be maintained frequently. If you are disconnected for a couple of days, you will be reminded to connect to the internet. If you refuse to heed this, your ink cartridges will no longer print.
  • An effective email address: This is need to for the service sign-up.
  • A valid debit or credit card: You will need this for the sign-up as well as payment.

ii. Sign up and then add your HP printer to the service using a printer code.

a. Type this address in your web browser: http://digital.hpinstantink.com/m7CBj

b. When the web page opens, click on “Sign Up Now”.
