How to Refill HP Printer Toner [Detailed Guide]

HP doesn’t recommend that you refill your HP printer toner cartridge. Instead, you are expected to buy a replacement cartridge once your toner runs out. However, the expensive cost of getting a replacement cartridge is why most folks prefer to refill their HP printer toner.

Therefore, if you want to learn how to refill your HP printer toner, we recommend that you carefully follow the instructions provided below.

Steps to Refill HP Printer Toner

To refill your HP printer toner, do these steps:

Step 1: Purchase a compatible toner powder.

The type of toner powered you purchase must be compatible with your cartridge and your HP printer. Since there are different types, you need to be sure that you are buying the type that will print with your installed cartridge and printer.

Step 2: Take out the toner cartridge from your HP printer.

Follow the instructions in your user manual to learn how to take out the cartridge. Alternatively, you can check the instructions we shared in the “How to Change HP Printer Toner” section of this article.

Step 3: Put the cartridge on a piece of paper or towel that is resting on an even surface.

This action is to prevent toner from spilling and messing up the place.

If you don’t want the toner to touch your hands, you can also wear rubber gloves.

Note: For folks who will use a soldering iron as their burn tool during the process of refilling the toner should, the surface you use should be hard to prevent it from burning.

Step 4: Find your cartridge’s holding tank where the toner powder will be filled into.

Some holding tanks have a refill hole while others do not. Some are designed with a refill hole covered with a removable plastic plug.

If your holding tank is designed with a refill hole or the hole has a removable plastic plug, jump to step 6.

If your holding tank doesn’t have a refill hole, do step 5.

Step 5: Create a refill hole on your cartridge.

Below are some tips to bear in mind when creating a refill hole on your cartridge:

i. Check the refill kit for a burn tool, aluminum flue tape, and instructions.

If the kit doesn’t come with the above items and instructions on how to use the burn tool, you can use a soldering iron to do the job.

ii. If you are using a soldering iron, you have to be careful when creating the hole. The advantage of using a burn tool is that you will only need to melt the edges around the hole instead of a lot of unwanted plastic.

iii. For burn tools that come with a tip screw, ensure that the tip is properly screwed before heating it to enable it to heat efficiently.

iv. Create a hole in the holding tank that will accommodate the nozzle of the toner powder bottle you purchased. When creating the hole, ensure that you don’t drill too deep to avoid damaging other parts of the cartridge.

v. If melted plastic rises around the edge of the hole you are creating, ensure that you melt or trim it off. This is necessary to ensure that the aluminum flue tape will be able to rest and cover the seal. Also, it will make the cartridge fit into your HP printer.

Step 6: Put the nozzle of the toner powder bottle into the refill hole.

When doing this, ensure that the nozzle fits perfectly into the refill hole. Once the nozzle is in the hole, tap the bottle gently at the side to release the toner into the cartridge’s holding tank.

Depending on the size of the toner bottle, you could end up dispensing the content in one go.

Step 7: Cover the refill hole.

For cartridges that have a refill hole with a removable plastic plug, simply re-insert the plug into the refill hole.

For cartridges that required creating a refill hole, follow the refill kit instructions on how to cover the refill hole.

If your refill kit didn’t come with instructions, get an aluminum flue tape and cover the hole as best as you can to prevent the toner from spilling out of the cartridge.

Step 8: Hold the cartridge horizontally and shake it back and forth.

This action is to spread the toner evenly within the cartridge.

Step 9: If your toner cartridge has a smart chip, replace it with the one that came with the refill kit.

If you don’t do this, your HP printer will not work.

Step 10: Reinstall your cartridge into your HP printer.

HP Printer Toner Leaking [Solution]

If your HP printer toner is leaking, there is nothing you can do but replace the cartridge.

If you bought the cartridge from a genuine and authorized retailer or store, you can put the cartridge in a plastic bag and then return it for a refund or replacement. Note that refunds or replacement depends on the policy of your retailer.

Alternatively, if you got a genuine cartridge that hasn’t been tampered with or refilled, and is still under warranty, then you can contact HP Customer Support for further assistance.

HP Printer Toner Smearing [Solutions]

Do the following troubleshooting to resolve the HP printer toner smearing issue:

i. Ensure that what you want to print on faces the right direction.

Some paper types will naturally smear if you print on the wrong side.

ii. Confirm that the medium you want to print on supports laser printing.

In other words, not all print medium allows HP Laser printers to print on them. Therefore, you need to consult your printer manual to find out the print media your HP printer supports.

iii. Change the paper type settings to “Extra Heavy”, “Heavy Paper” or “Cardstock” depending on the weight of the paper you want to print on.

Thick papers will smear when you print on them using the normal paper type setting. Therefore, you need to go to your printer’s settings or preferences and then find the option that allows you to modify the paper type setting.

iv. Shake the cartridge side to side.

The toner in the cartridge might not be distributed evenly within the cartridge which could cause the toner to smear. Therefore, you should take out the cartridge from your printer, and then shake it from side to side to distribute the toner.

v. Replace the cartridge.

vi. Replace your printer fuser.

vii. Contact HP for further assistance and support.

HP LaserJet Toner Not Sticking To Paper [How to Fix]

If your HP LaserJet toner is not sticking to the paper, try the following solutions:

1. Confirm that you are Using Supported Paper

Not all paper types are designed to work on laser printers. Therefore, you need to confirm that the paper you want to use supports LaserJet printing. You can use another paper type that you are sure is supported by laser printers to confirm.

2. Ensure that you are using the Correct Settings

To ensure that you get the best print quality, you need to set your printer settings to match the paper type and size you are using.

Therefore, depending on the device you are printing from or printer model, go to your printer settings and select the right settings that match the paper in use.

3. Change the Fuser Temperature

You can change the fuser temperature to be hotter or colder to match the paper type you are using. If you are using thick paper such as cardstock, then you can increase the fuser temperature to enable the toner to dry faster.

To learn how to change the fuser temperature of your HP printer, you should check your printer manual for instructions.

4. Examine the Fuser Unit for Damages

The fuser unit is responsible for drying the toner to allow it to stick to your paper. If the fuser unit is damaged, it won’t function as it should leading to the problem at hand.

Therefore, to find out if the fuser unit is responsible for the problem, take it out of your printer and then examine it for damages. If it is damaged, then you need to get a new fuser unit.

5. Contact HP

This is the last resort when it comes to fixing your HP LaserJet toner not sticking to the paper issue. When you contact HP, if the issue cannot be resolved remotely, a technician will be sent to repair the printer if this service is available in your region.

HP Printer Toner Recycling [Detailed Guide]

In this section, we will reveal all you need to know about HP printer toner recycling.

Why Should You Recycle your HP Printer Toner Cartridge? [Answered]

Recycling your HP printer toner cartridge benefits our planet’s ecosystem and is a better alternative compared to having it end up in the landfill.

It takes over 400 years for plastic to be broken down completely. Therefore, if your cartridge is not recycled, it will remain a problem to the ecosystem for hundreds of years to come.

Also, recycling your toner cartridge means that the possibility of your cartridge ending up in our waterways is zero. Given that annually 8 million metric tons of these materials find themselves in our waterways, if we all recycled, that number will be cut down significantly.

HP knows these issues that plague our planet which is why they have developed a toner recycling program that costs you nothing at all. Once you have purchased a genuine HP toner cartridge, you can be part of this program.

Where Can I recycle my HP Printer Toner Cartridge? [Answered]

You can recycle your HP printer toner cartridge through the following means:

1. Authorized Stores

Some stores participate in what is known as the free drop-off program that allows you to return your HP products for recycling. Some of these retail stores include Walmart, Best Buy, Office Depot, and Staples.

If you aren’t sure of the authorization of your retailer to serve as a collection location, you can visit http://www.hp.com/recycle before clicking on “Drop it off”. You can then check if your retailer is listed.

These authorized stores have drop off location areas that are close to the toner sales area. If you can’t find the drop off location, ask the sales or customer service representatives in the store.

Although you don’t get anything in return for recycling or pay anything to recycle your toner cartridge, you are contributing positively to sustaining the planet.

2. Mail

You can also send in your HP printer toner for recycling via mail. The packing of your cartridge usually comes with a mail envelope. If you can’t find it, visit https://www.hp.com/us-en/hp-information/recycling/ink-toner.html and then click on “Recycle”. After that, select your country, and then click on your type of product before clicking “Send in to HP”.

You will have to select if you desire the shipping materials printed or if you want the materials sent to you. If you own several products you want to recycle, choose the pallet pickup option. After that, select the product type that is being returned and the number of boxes or envelopes you require. When you have made your selections, click on “order”.

A form will be provided for you to fill in your contact as well as mailing information. The postage-paid mailing items will then be sent to you where you can package your used toner cartridges to be sent in for recycling when you choose.

You can request supplies via call at this number 1-800-340-245 if you cannot access the internet. This number is available during weekdays excluding major holidays in the U.S. from 8 am – 8 pm EST.

For proper shipping, you should tape about 2 to 8 supply boxes together. After that, send the boxes using a prepaid shipping label that you printed from HP’s website. Alternatively, you can use any sturdy box that you have. However, ensure that the weight is less than 70 pounds.

3. Recycling Toner Collection Units

This option is designed for large enterprises and it allows them to send in not only the cartridges but also the transfer kits and fuser kits.

To safely access the toner collection unit (TCU) for recycling, do the following steps:

Step 1: Open the front door of your HP printer.

Step 2: Release the TCU latches.

Step 3: Take out the TCU from your HP printer.

Do this step carefully as toner dust might be on the TCU.

Step 4: Put the TCU (Toner Collection Unit) into the plastic bag HP provided when the TCU repayment was delivered.

Step 5: Put the plastic bag into the collection kit box that came from the HP Planet Partners Program and then ship it with your depleted toner cartridges.
