How to Perform HP Printer Setup on Chromebook

1. Perform HP Printer Setup on Chromebook via HP Smart (For HP+ Printers)

For HP+ printer owners, you have to log in to your HP account via HP Smart using a different device e.g. your smartphone to perform your HP printer setup on Chromebook. This is compulsory because if you fail to register a new HP+ printer with HP, it might cause the device to stop functioning.

Therefore, do the steps below:

Step 1: Ensure that your smartphone is on the same wireless network as your HP printer.

Step 2: Go to your device’s App Store and download the HP Smart app.

Step 1: Ensure that your Chromebook OS version is up-to-date by updating the operating system.

To update your Chromebook OS version, do the following:

i. Go to the desktop of your Chromebook.

ii. Click on the desktop’s bottommost right corner.

iii. Click on the icon for “Settings”.

iv. Click on “About Chrome”.

v. Click on “Check for updates”.

vi. In the event that your Chromebook is up to date, you will see this displayed “Your Chromebook is up to date”.

vii. If your Chromebook is not up to date, your device will automatically download the current update.

Note: Ensure that your Chromebook has an internet connection.

viii. Once the download is complete, an arrow icon will appear on the desktop’s bottommost right corner.

ix. Click on the icon to apply your Chromebook update.

x. Choose “Restart to Update”.

Once your Chromebook restarts, the update will take place.

Step 2: Connect your HP printer and your Chromebook to the same wireless network. Alternatively, connect both devices using a USB cable.

i. Wireless connection for touchscreen control panel printers

  • Go to the control panel of your HP printer.
  • Open the menu for “Network”, “Wireless Settings”, or “Setup”.

ii. Wireless connection non-touchscreen control panel printers

  • Press down the “Wireless” button of your HP printer for about 5 seconds. Alternatively, you can release the button once you see that the “Wireless” LED indicator has started to blink.
  • Within 2 minutes after doing the above, press down the router’s “Wi-Fi Protected Setup” (WPS) button until you see the initiation of the connection between both devices.

Once the connection is complete, the Wireless LED indicator will stop flashing.

iii. Wireless connection for HP Tango, ENVY 6400 and 6000, and Deskjet 6400 and 6000 printers

  • Press down the printer’s “Power” and “Wi-Fi” buttons at the same time for about 5 seconds until you see the printer’s blue bar flashing.
  • Within 2 minutes after doing the above, press down the router’s “Wi-Fi Protected Setup” (WPS) button until you see the initiation of the connection between both devices.

Once the connection is complete, the printer’s blue bar will stop flashing.

iv. Ethernet (Wired) Network Connection

  • Plug your Ethernet cord into the Ethernet port on your HP printer.
  • Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to a port on your access point or wireless router.

When you do this, the green LED indicator on your printer point will be steady while the printer’s orange activity LED indicator will blink.

v. USB Connection

  • Plug one end of the USB cable into your printer’s USB port
  • Connect the other end of the USB cable to any available USB port on your Chromebook.
  • If you see a prompt, install the available software.

Step 3: On your Chromebook desktop, click on the clock, before clicking on the icon for “Settings”.

Step 4: Go to the end of your Chromebook screen and click on “Advanced”.

Step 5: Under the section for “Printing” click on “Printers”, then click on “Add printer”.

  • If your HP printer is displayed, click on the icon or name before clicking on “Add”.
